Elements and principles slideshow

The process of the elements and principles project:
When i first read about this assignment and looked at the student's sample slide show, i was intimidated. I wrote down all he elements and principles and tried to really understand each concept before attempting the photo process. But then i started taking pictures and the principles and elements were clicking. I was able to look at something and say " hey that's a good example of value!". I thought it would be hard living in a dorm off campus that all my pictures would be boring or repetitive but i was actually able to get a lot of variety. I tried to use images that were easily identified.

illustrator videos

What is the most important fact from each video that I think will help me in using Ilustrator?

-For creating images that can be scaled with out jeopardizing quality, and it can be used for a variety of different things.
-profile is a great starting point for the document. you can custom the options for the profile.
-Start with the art boards panel, you can add, or remove/ delete an art board at any time. You can add board anywhere within the canvas.
- easiest way is to use the paintbrush tool. brush definition resembles the tool used, example charcoal tool has the look of using charcoal. There are other ways to use brushwork, under window menu press brushes.
We can see attributes in the top corner. You can tell my looking at the stroke splotches, similar to layers in photoshops with the layer thats above will appear above the other layers.
-Two options with type tool, one clicking- called point type, the other is aria type.  Its very similar to the text tool of indesign.
-Located in the tool panel. Hide the bounding box. Many things you can do, distort and transform. Can change predictive of artwork.

-control panel also know as options bar. Important because it changes what your working with inside document
-Artwork almost always opens in preview mode. Can look at primitive shapes in outline mode, less distractions.
-Layers panel is very similar to indesign and photo shoppe, which i am very comfortable with  Can also be accessed under window menu.

Arts,visual culture and media education

1. What are the three (3) most interesting facts you learned from the lecture? and why are they interesting to you?
 1) One point he made that i liked a lot were things that we take for granted. "We take for granted what is real, what we take for granted is truth, and myth in terms of visuality".  I feel there is a lot of truth in this statement. It kind of reminds me in a way of the photos we saw in class that had been photoshopped. That people really take advantage of what we see with eyes in everyday life.

2) He quoted a woman named Donna H who said "visual is always a question of the power to see and , perhaps of the violence implicit in our visualizing practices". I liked this quote a lot and thought it was very important because visualizing is much more then just seeing. It's feeling, its perspective and much more then just seeing what is in front of our eyes.

3)He said that visual culture is the outcome of past and present coming together. I think this was very interesting  because i can completely see how that is relevant. Things change so much with time and one way we see these changes, and learn from them, is with what we see. and we document thats how we know these things and connect with the past. this is how we will progress to the future as well.

2. Discuss the role of an art educator in regards to visual culture. Is it important? Why or why not?
Art education does have a role in regards of visual culture. He made the point that schools are no longer the main site of learning. "what we are trying to do is ask the question ,  what can be created with what we see?". And as a teacher what we would essentially be doing is shaping the youth for the future generation. that message needs to be passed on so we can grow as a society in the future.

3. What do you think can you take away from this lecture and apply in your future classroom as an art educator?
Although this was a long video i feel like i actually learned many things from this video. Kevin Tavin is very well spoken and had a way of breaking things down in a way that i understand them. Although it would have been much easier to relate what he was saying about the visual slides if i was actually seeing them as he was referencing them. But i feel there are many things i will take to the classroom. That is the amount of power, in a way, is executed in art and visuals. That so many different things can be said in many ways even without words. and the things that can be said or enforce with the use of words as well.

Adobe InDesign Video - Blog Posting

What is the most important fact from each video that I think will help me in using InDesign?

1.What is InDesign
- InDesign is a program that allows you to create, assemble and out put documents  for whatever you need them for, print ,web or interactive designs

2.Creating a New Document
-creating a new document is less complicated then what is seems. To start a new document just press command N, or control N. Its always set to default, But first establish intent, h=what its for. The page size will automatically change the pixel values. You can create an interactive document, or a digital publishing document. There is an option for device size, which has preset options but can be customized.

3.Add Text to Frames
- Press  the T key to activate type tool. Just click and drag to define text frame. Then fill with placeholder text. Make sure a frame is not selected. Then place from file menu, select image and click open. with one click image will be brought in at 100%. Frame can be resized. This can be done by typing in the number of inches desired. The frame can be moved or the image around within the frame. Or can create a new frame.

4.Importing Text Cleanly
-There is a pre-existing primary text frame. That allows text to flow from page to page. Go to file and click Place. Hold shift and open, which will bring you into the RTF import options. Anything check will come in with the text. To place text just click within text frame. this brings in unformatted text. You can un place text with Ctrl Z.  If a font is missing it will be highlighted in origin. this will happen if that format doesn't exist on the computer.

5.Selecting and Editing Text
-Press type menu and show hidden characters and find how was placed. Double click within frame to activate insertion point. Double click within word you will select it. to select all click ctrl A. Info panel will tell you how many lines words or paragraph used. Can copy text with eye dropper tool.  Text can be dragged and dropped as well.

6.Editing Text
-Was the same video from #5

7.Working with Character Styles:
-Highlight word, and change font style, which creates a local override. More efficiently, create a charter style to reuse every time. Go to character style alt click on create new style, apply and click ok. When creating a character style, it can be used in a number of different places, headings, body ect.

8.Working with Paragraph Styles:
-Open paragraph styles panel, and dock it. You can see the basic styles applied by default. Highlight entire paragraph and show hidden characters. Change the font, change point size. Format text before creating style.

9.Adding Pages:
-Go to workspace and make sure Typography is selected. Mostly working with defaults. Some spreads will have both left and right page. Want the bleed to be the same all the way around. Create a new page. There are more then one way to add pages, Hold down Alt and click on page icon, will bring you to insert page options. You can choose where you'd like to add a page, before or after.

Digital Imagery

1. How do digital images play a role in your day-to-day life?
Digital images do play a role in my day to day life, there literally everywhere every ad every logo we see are digital images

2. In your personal life?
Again every ad, everything thing i buy from the supermarket has a digital image on it.
3. In the way you experience your world?
It definitely plays a role in how  i experience the world, 20 years ago things were extremely different without the use of anything digital! We become so accustomed to it that most of us probably don't realize how much digital imagery were subjected to.

4. What are your thoughts on ethics and aesthetics as it relates to photojournalism and digital imagery manipulation?

I find it almost scary how advanced technology has gotten. A decade ago if a picture was in the newspaper no would have thought anything other then it being proof taken in time. But now that changes so much, you cant really trust what we see, Photos aren't even being used as evidence anymore because we cant prove it hasn't been edited in some way or form

5. What are your thoughts on these example of these manipulated images ?
It really is mind blowing how much things have changed, and how easy it is change the past. The one thing that stuck with me was the picture of the court room. Then the next picture was the same court room without Hilary Clinton in it. Its unbelievable how easy it is to make someone disappear. Its almost scary in a way, that we cant always believe what we see.

6. Out of all the examples, which one do you believe has the most impact? Why?

I think the flag raising. Something like that could completely re-write history. How do we know our future youth wont be taught things that weren't true about history because of the images and stories that could be made up.

1) The process of setting up a gmail ais very simple setting up the blog was slightly more difficult for some one who isn't a g-mail person, not to mention NOT a mac person either.

2)Appartently i am not a big computer person so I'm hoping to learn ways to make using a computer simpler for myself

3) I feel somewhat nervous about a hybrid course, my previous college also used blackboard but the professors hardly used it.
