Adobe InDesign Videos

For each video, what was discussed that  you think will be the most helpful in creating your Digital Portfolio?

Video #1 Creating an InDesign Portfolio
(http://tv.adobe.com/watch/make-it-with-creative-cloud/creating-a-portfolio-for-print-pdf-and-the-ipad/)

I found this video to be very helpful because it goes into great detail about every step in the process. I think that because they gave a well done visual example of a photographers portfolio. It was helpful to see the format, although I know mine will be a little bit different in content. The format of the example was as follows; Table of Contents, Statement from the artist, collection of his
photographs, work resume and lastly back cover.

Video #2 Adding to your portfolio
http://tv.adobe.com/watch/make-it-with-creative-cloud/adding-your-work-to-an-indesign-portfolio/

I found this video helpful in creating a portfolio because of the depth he went into about adding text. I learned how to use various different tools including "Margins and Columns". How to edit and place text as well as fixing a text overflow.

Video #3 Publishing, Print and interactive PDF's.
http://tv.adobe.com/watch/make-it-with-creative-cloud/publishing-print-and-interactive-pdf-portfolio/

I  learned the benefits of using the interactive version of a portfolio. There are many different things that can be done like changing the transitions for every picture. He went step by step on how to create and set images as buttons. He used various different tools to edit and create buttons

What challenges did you encounter while creating your portolio and how did you over come them?

My main issue that i am having is the lack of content. I know that as I continue my education i will gain more material

What do you think of your finished portfolio?
It is not quite finished yet but I am fond of the way it is progressing.

Power point blog questions- Dali

What is the theme of your presentation and why did you select that?
I selected the art work of Salvador Dali. I always found his work very interesting and different. I learned a lot about him as a person and have come to realize he is just as weird as i would have assumed!

Did you encounter any challenges when creating this presentation? Please describe them and how you overcame them.

Surprisingly i did not encounter any problems, it was very simple and the exercise we did with the power point was very helpful.
What did you enjoy the most about this project and why? The least? and why?
I found it fun, i like making things ascetically pleasing. It is very simple and i find power point to be the easiest program we've used so far.

Do you think you will use tools like PowerPoint in your art classroom? Why or why not?
Absolutely, its a simple easy way to get points across with visuals, videos, and fun things like sounds and animations. It will definitely keep the students engaged and learning.

week 10 the art of failure

  1. What are the similarities between the artists interviewed in this article? What are the differences?
There were many differences between the artists in this article. One of the main differences were the career choices, there was a wide range from performers and play writers to teachers. The similarities of the people being interviewed was the fact that they all worked hard to be where they are today and they've seen many  failures along there journeys.

2.Is there anything discussed in this article that you can relate to?

Yes there was. I could relate to having the fear of failure in my own life experiences.

3.Do you believe that taking risks and pushing boundaries is important to the  creative  process? Why or why not?
Yes I absolutely believe that taking risks is important to the creative process. In a way taking risks is the creative process. Creativity is all about trying new ways of doing things and looking at things from different perspectives. If no one in the art world took risks or pushed boundaries art in general wouldn't be what it is today. We would have no movements, no surrealism, no Dadaism none of the fundamentals I've learned so much about.  I believe we should all do these things in our daily lives, because every day is a learning experience.

4.Do you experience fear of failure? When? How do you think it has impacted you positively or negatively?
I do experience the fear of failure very often. I am a slightly older student. It took me over six years to receive a two year associates degree from a community college. It was very hard for me, it seemed more difficult then it was for others in my age range. For a while I gave up. I told myself that it was to hard and I couldn't do it. I thought working a minimum wage job and spending all my money was all I could do with my life. It was really scary, for a while I didn't even try to get a bachelors degree because I knew I would fail and waste my time. One day I woke up and realized I had to do something with my life before it was halfway over. I got my act together, I worked really hard applying to schools,  and made an art portfolio in one month! And guess what, I didn't fail I got accepted! I did it, and now I am here today working hard to do what I want to do. I feel that it was both positive and negative. I learned a lot from this process and wouldn't be who I am today if I gave in to the fear of failure. But on the other hand, if I didn't experience the fear of failure at all I would be at this same place years ago.

5.How do you think you can support your students as their teacher when they encounter the "fear of failure"?
I will tell them my story. I will encourage them to work hard and overcome any type of failure that they will inevitably face at some point or another. And a teacher I will do my best to prevent fear of any kind in my classroom. I will show support and encourage a strong work ethic.

more then human blog week 7

1. What are the most interesting discoveries you made watching this video?

I found one of the most interesting things mentioned was in the beginning of the video,  that the human body that we see in works of art does not really resemble the body of a human at all.

2. What do you think about Vilayanur S. Ramachandran theory with the chicks?

Ramachandran's theory is that chicks are mesmerized by the stripe on a beak  Same goes for humans. when we see artwork that is aesthetically pleasing. There are some things that attract our eye more than other things.  I find this to be a very interesting theory, in this class is the first ive ever heard of it.

3. Do you see any connection between the art/subjects  in this video (Venus of Willendorf, the Herring gull chicks, Egyptian images of the human body, Kritian Boy) and the way the human body is portrayed today?

The connection I see between these pieces and the human body is the details. As the Egyptian images were done with great detail, almost idealistic and exaggerated. As for the kritian boy, is realistic and  shows detail in the sculpture overall. The venus of wilendorf may not be appealing but had much beauty in the meaning of fertility.

week 8 Blog posting indesign newsletter

What is the most important fact from each video that I did help me in using InDesign?
Creating a newsletter: http://tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-indesign-cs6/creating-a-newsletter/

-InDesign doesn't force you to use a text frame if you start typing it will automatically make one for you.

Wrapping Text around Objects: https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/how-to/indesign-wrapping-text-around-objects.html?set=indesign--fundamentals--work-type

-"For the pull quote occupying the middle and right columns, wrap text on all sides and adjust the offset values to create sufficient padding all around it."

Placing Graphics: https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/how-to/indesign-placing-graphics-graphic-frames.html?set=indesign--fundamentals--create-artwork

-indesign supports graphics from different formats such as jpegs, psd, illustration files.

Week 6 blog video response

1. What do you think of the term: Digital Natives vs. Digital Immigrants?
I think it is a very real way to describe how different generations connect to technology

2. Where do you fit in?

Honestly I am a little bit of a mix, I am 24 years old when I was growing up household internet and cell phones where not really a thing. I remember playing with my moms beeper as a toy! in elementary school we had a dinosaur computer with dial up. Heck I didn't even have a cell phone until high school. So growing up these rhings were not used as tools for learning as they are today. I know infants that know how to use ipads more effectively then I do.

3. In regards to the Digital Divide, how do you see it impacting education?
Prensky made some very good points about using these things like smart phones and video games as tools for education. That this is how kids communicate and understand things that it should be more recognized in the education process

4. What are the most interesting concepts Prensky presents? Why?
I liked what he was saying about when teachers brought students into one conference and the students grouped together and blew him away with the ideas they had with technology.

5. Is there anything Prensky presents that you are skeptical about? What is it and why do you think so?
in a way I'm on the fence about the idea of letting kids use there smart phones in the class. I grew up with out the use of these things and I may be biased but I agree that kids shouldn't bring there phones to elementary and middle school classes. To be me it just feels like a distraction.

6. Do you think technology is important in an art clasroom? Why or Why not?
Yes it can be a helpful tool. Such as watching videos in class, powerpoints even audio to help teach.

7. How do you imagine you will (or will not)  incorporate technology in your classroom?

that is a tough question, being that I want to be an art teacher it may be a little different if I was teaching different/more subjects. I think I would use technology as an accent. use it to help teach kids about art. But who knows maybe at that point it will be mandatory.

Newsletter response

1. Do you think creating a classroom newsletter is an effective way to communicate with your audience? Why or Why Not?

Yes i do, It is a fun and organized way to communicate ideas. It can be simplified for a younger audience or more complicated for a more mature audience.

2. What did you think about the process of creating a newsletter using Adobe Creative Suite Tools?
I used a template which made it very simple, it was harder to come up with the content.

3. How did this project strengthen your digtial /new media skills?
It strengthened my skills in digital media because this was the first time i used a template. It was also good to help me sharpen my skills in indesign.

aesthetics video and article

1. For each video and article list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

Carta video- I learned a lot of different things in this video. most concepts I did already know but there were a few things I learned for the first time. the word "schematization" I hadn't heard until this video.

Philosophy of the arts video- again I was familiar with a lot of the concepts from prior classes. I knew about the different styles or art and artists but the philosophy concept taught me many different things I didn't know prior.

article- I found the article gave me a lot of insight about what we see, it gave me a different way to look at things. Because they broke down things that we don't even think about, like lines for example.

2. Which philosopher's theory on aesthetics do you feel is most important? Be sure to mention the philosopher's name, era (time in history), and contribution to the aesthetic theory in your response.
I thought all the ones mentioned made really good points and had very interesting ways of looking at things. I found plato (4th century) view on aesthetics most important. Although I disagree completely  on his view on poetry not being art. He had one quote that I admired a lot " there is a beauty by which all things are beautiful".  liked the concept he used about "ideas" the example they used in the video was that when you draw a triangle you are not creating a triangle but a perfect copy of the idea of  a triangle.

3. What do you think about Changeux and Ramachandran scientific view of aesthetics and art? What was the most interesting fact you discovered from each speakers lecture?

I found them very interesting, Ramachandran more so. I learn many things from these lectures but most importantly I learned about vision and how we see things. He showed an image of a Dalmatian dog in black in white that just looks like a series of splotches. Our brain links the splotches together, then the brain is "groping for a solution" its trying to put together what it sees.

4. What is your opinion of the films and article?
Carta video- Honestly this video was SO hard to understand, not only the thick accent and constant stuttering but the audio quality was weak and its just so lengthy. The second speaker I enjoyed much more, he was humorous I could understand him and he used visuals to help his lectures.
Philosophy of the arts video- I enjoyed this video and found it much more enjoyable then the first one. I learned a lot about the philosopher's and there philosophy's. I really enjoyed all the art they showed as well.
article- I found this article very interesting and easy to comprehend the content.

5. How do the theories discussed here relate to "Visual Culture"?
I think that practically every theory shown relates to visual culture. In a way its because its breaking down what we see and what we perceive what we see to be.

Elements and principles slideshow

The process of the elements and principles project:
When i first read about this assignment and looked at the student's sample slide show, i was intimidated. I wrote down all he elements and principles and tried to really understand each concept before attempting the photo process. But then i started taking pictures and the principles and elements were clicking. I was able to look at something and say " hey that's a good example of value!". I thought it would be hard living in a dorm off campus that all my pictures would be boring or repetitive but i was actually able to get a lot of variety. I tried to use images that were easily identified.

illustrator videos

What is the most important fact from each video that I think will help me in using Ilustrator?

-For creating images that can be scaled with out jeopardizing quality, and it can be used for a variety of different things.
-profile is a great starting point for the document. you can custom the options for the profile.
-Start with the art boards panel, you can add, or remove/ delete an art board at any time. You can add board anywhere within the canvas.
- easiest way is to use the paintbrush tool. brush definition resembles the tool used, example charcoal tool has the look of using charcoal. There are other ways to use brushwork, under window menu press brushes.
We can see attributes in the top corner. You can tell my looking at the stroke splotches, similar to layers in photoshops with the layer thats above will appear above the other layers.
-Two options with type tool, one clicking- called point type, the other is aria type.  Its very similar to the text tool of indesign.
-Located in the tool panel. Hide the bounding box. Many things you can do, distort and transform. Can change predictive of artwork.

-control panel also know as options bar. Important because it changes what your working with inside document
-Artwork almost always opens in preview mode. Can look at primitive shapes in outline mode, less distractions.
-Layers panel is very similar to indesign and photo shoppe, which i am very comfortable with  Can also be accessed under window menu.

Arts,visual culture and media education

1. What are the three (3) most interesting facts you learned from the lecture? and why are they interesting to you?
 1) One point he made that i liked a lot were things that we take for granted. "We take for granted what is real, what we take for granted is truth, and myth in terms of visuality".  I feel there is a lot of truth in this statement. It kind of reminds me in a way of the photos we saw in class that had been photoshopped. That people really take advantage of what we see with eyes in everyday life.

2) He quoted a woman named Donna H who said "visual is always a question of the power to see and , perhaps of the violence implicit in our visualizing practices". I liked this quote a lot and thought it was very important because visualizing is much more then just seeing. It's feeling, its perspective and much more then just seeing what is in front of our eyes.

3)He said that visual culture is the outcome of past and present coming together. I think this was very interesting  because i can completely see how that is relevant. Things change so much with time and one way we see these changes, and learn from them, is with what we see. and we document thats how we know these things and connect with the past. this is how we will progress to the future as well.

2. Discuss the role of an art educator in regards to visual culture. Is it important? Why or why not?
Art education does have a role in regards of visual culture. He made the point that schools are no longer the main site of learning. "what we are trying to do is ask the question ,  what can be created with what we see?". And as a teacher what we would essentially be doing is shaping the youth for the future generation. that message needs to be passed on so we can grow as a society in the future.

3. What do you think can you take away from this lecture and apply in your future classroom as an art educator?
Although this was a long video i feel like i actually learned many things from this video. Kevin Tavin is very well spoken and had a way of breaking things down in a way that i understand them. Although it would have been much easier to relate what he was saying about the visual slides if i was actually seeing them as he was referencing them. But i feel there are many things i will take to the classroom. That is the amount of power, in a way, is executed in art and visuals. That so many different things can be said in many ways even without words. and the things that can be said or enforce with the use of words as well.

Adobe InDesign Video - Blog Posting

What is the most important fact from each video that I think will help me in using InDesign?

1.What is InDesign
- InDesign is a program that allows you to create, assemble and out put documents  for whatever you need them for, print ,web or interactive designs

2.Creating a New Document
-creating a new document is less complicated then what is seems. To start a new document just press command N, or control N. Its always set to default, But first establish intent, h=what its for. The page size will automatically change the pixel values. You can create an interactive document, or a digital publishing document. There is an option for device size, which has preset options but can be customized.

3.Add Text to Frames
- Press  the T key to activate type tool. Just click and drag to define text frame. Then fill with placeholder text. Make sure a frame is not selected. Then place from file menu, select image and click open. with one click image will be brought in at 100%. Frame can be resized. This can be done by typing in the number of inches desired. The frame can be moved or the image around within the frame. Or can create a new frame.

4.Importing Text Cleanly
-There is a pre-existing primary text frame. That allows text to flow from page to page. Go to file and click Place. Hold shift and open, which will bring you into the RTF import options. Anything check will come in with the text. To place text just click within text frame. this brings in unformatted text. You can un place text with Ctrl Z.  If a font is missing it will be highlighted in origin. this will happen if that format doesn't exist on the computer.

5.Selecting and Editing Text
-Press type menu and show hidden characters and find how was placed. Double click within frame to activate insertion point. Double click within word you will select it. to select all click ctrl A. Info panel will tell you how many lines words or paragraph used. Can copy text with eye dropper tool.  Text can be dragged and dropped as well.

6.Editing Text
-Was the same video from #5

7.Working with Character Styles:
-Highlight word, and change font style, which creates a local override. More efficiently, create a charter style to reuse every time. Go to character style alt click on create new style, apply and click ok. When creating a character style, it can be used in a number of different places, headings, body ect.

8.Working with Paragraph Styles:
-Open paragraph styles panel, and dock it. You can see the basic styles applied by default. Highlight entire paragraph and show hidden characters. Change the font, change point size. Format text before creating style.

9.Adding Pages:
-Go to workspace and make sure Typography is selected. Mostly working with defaults. Some spreads will have both left and right page. Want the bleed to be the same all the way around. Create a new page. There are more then one way to add pages, Hold down Alt and click on page icon, will bring you to insert page options. You can choose where you'd like to add a page, before or after.

Digital Imagery

1. How do digital images play a role in your day-to-day life?
Digital images do play a role in my day to day life, there literally everywhere every ad every logo we see are digital images

2. In your personal life?
Again every ad, everything thing i buy from the supermarket has a digital image on it.
3. In the way you experience your world?
It definitely plays a role in how  i experience the world, 20 years ago things were extremely different without the use of anything digital! We become so accustomed to it that most of us probably don't realize how much digital imagery were subjected to.

4. What are your thoughts on ethics and aesthetics as it relates to photojournalism and digital imagery manipulation?

I find it almost scary how advanced technology has gotten. A decade ago if a picture was in the newspaper no would have thought anything other then it being proof taken in time. But now that changes so much, you cant really trust what we see, Photos aren't even being used as evidence anymore because we cant prove it hasn't been edited in some way or form

5. What are your thoughts on these example of these manipulated images ?
It really is mind blowing how much things have changed, and how easy it is change the past. The one thing that stuck with me was the picture of the court room. Then the next picture was the same court room without Hilary Clinton in it. Its unbelievable how easy it is to make someone disappear. Its almost scary in a way, that we cant always believe what we see.

6. Out of all the examples, which one do you believe has the most impact? Why?

I think the flag raising. Something like that could completely re-write history. How do we know our future youth wont be taught things that weren't true about history because of the images and stories that could be made up.

1) The process of setting up a gmail ais very simple setting up the blog was slightly more difficult for some one who isn't a g-mail person, not to mention NOT a mac person either.

2)Appartently i am not a big computer person so I'm hoping to learn ways to make using a computer simpler for myself

3) I feel somewhat nervous about a hybrid course, my previous college also used blackboard but the professors hardly used it.
